Series 40E

The Detroit Diesel Series 40 engine is the latest generation in a family of diesel engines with over 100 years of experience. The Series 40 is an entirely new design, engineered and manufactured using the most advanced technology available today. The result is a lightweight, 4-cycle, inline, six cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine spanning a horsepower range of 160 to 330 horsepower. Comprised of 7.6 and 8.7 liter displacements, the Series 40 engine family is available in turbocharged and turbocharged air-to-air charge cooled models.

The four models in the Series 40 family provide the engine with versatility in the automotive, construction, industrial, and generator set markets. The two displacements of the Series 40 allow this engine series to provide a wide range of horsepower offerings in all market sectors. This enables the Series 40 to offer power that is needed under any condition while maintaining the high standards of performance the engine achieves.

The Series 50 is evolved from the Series 60 engine for the truck market with the same excellent fuel consumption, durability, and low emissions. The Series 50 is a four cylinder version of the six cylinder 12.7L Series 60. It incorporates many of the same parts:

Electronic Controls, Cylinder Kits, Bearings, Gear Train, Rocker Arms, Valves, Water Pum, Fuel, Pump, Electronic Unit Injectors.

Using the same proven Series 60 design philosophy, components of the Series 50 were modified to accommodate two less cylinders. As a result, Series 50 is an electronically controlled, overhead cam, turbocharged, air-to-air intercooled engine. The counter-rotating balance shafts allow the Series 50 to offer the same smooth performance as the Series 60.
